The 32nd Renton CROP Hunger Walk is Sunday, May 3, to raise money to help feed the hungry.
Renton CROP walks have raised more than $574,000 to help the hungry worldwide, with more than $143,000 going to Renton food agencies, according to local organizer Sharon Kenyon.
“Last year for the sixth time, Renton was in the top 100 walks, which is pretty great considering there are more than 2,000 communities in the U.S. supporting CROP Hunger Walks,” said Kenyon.
This year’s walk includes the 10k (six miles) walk or the Golden 1 1/2 mile walk. Both walks begin at the 1:30 p.m. at the Liberty Park Shelter. Registration is 1 to 1:25 p.m.
Participants can sign up with a church or organization, online as a team or individual or at the walk. Anyone under 18 needs a parent’s signature.
For more information on the walk or to sign up online, visit www.rentoncrophungerwalk.org.
For new groups wishing to participate, or for any questions, contact Sharon Kenyon at 425-271-2080.
The 6-mile mile walk heads east along Cedar River Trail, to Ron Regis Park and then returns. Checkpoints along the way have snacks, drinks, phones, first aid kits and rides back. The 1 1/2-mile goes to the River Park Shelter and back again.
Twenty-five percent of the proceeds go to help fight hunger locally at the Salvation Army Renton Rotary Food Bank, the Margie Williams Helping Hands, the
Center of Hope day center at Renton City Hall, ARISE (Area of Renton Interfaith Shelter Endeavor) and the St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank.
The other 75 percent helps fight hunger globally.
The Renton CROP Hunger Walk is sponsored by the REACH (Renton Ecumenical Association of Churches). CROP Hunger Walk is a program of Church World Service (CWS).
