Kim Unti, the acting executive director of the Renton Downtown Partnership, died after suffering a fatal brain injury when she was struck by a car in downtown Renton.
On Nov. 26, Unti was struck by a vehicle in downtown Renton, subsequently taken to Harborview Medical Center, and then died Nov. 28 because a fatal brain injury, according to a Facebook post from RDP.
RDP Board President Cameron Wong said after Unti died, she donated her organs, which he said is a testament to her giving spirit.
“So just that being what a lot of people said is Kim continuing to give, even though she’s not with us anymore, is a testament to her giving spirit,” Wong said. “And in the days that followed, the outpouring of support from the community, like I mentioned, she just had so many people whose lives she touched.”
Wong said Unti was the first staff member at RDP and had been heavily involved until March, when she decided to step back to focus on other endeavors such as friends, family and involvement at her church, Advent Lutheran in Mill Creek. Wong said Unti returned as the interim executive director in September when the previous executive director left, and she offered to return and help during the transition.
Wong said Unti was always the first to show up and volunteer, and said she was dedicated to downtown Renton. She was always at RDP events helping out wherever she could, even beyond her paid position. Wong said despite it being easy to get caught up with business and being busy, Unti always tried to get to know people, and she was really friendly.
“Everyone loved her. Everyone downtown really just had a heart for her as she had a heart for them,” Wong said. “I joke that every time I’d go downtown with her, she would always see someone she knew, and she was almost like a celebrity downtown. Just everyone knows her, everyone loves her.”
Wong said he was in total shock when he got the call about Unti being struck by a vehicle, as he had just seen her a few days prior when they were preparing for the RDP’s Small Business Saturday event. On the day of the accident, Wong said Unti was handing out flyers for the event. He added that in honor of Unti, people wore red, Unti’s favorite color.
Renton Mayor Armondo Pavone released a statement on Nov. 30 about Unti’s death. Pavone said Unti was a vibrant, longtime Renton community member and a downtown champion. Pavone said Unti made an impact on Renton that all will remember, and she will be greatly missed. He added that the Renton Police Department is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident and will provide an update when available.
