Flags will fly at half staff for two days at Renton City Hall, city facilities and fire stations to honor 19 firefighters, including the brother of a Renton police officer, who died fighting a wildfire in Arizona June 30.

The firefighters died while trying to protect themselves under fire-resistant shields from a fast-moving wildfire in Yarnell, Ariz.

One of those firefighters who died is the brother of Renton police officer Cassidy Steed.

“My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the 19 brave firefighters who died in the line of duty as they tried to save the homes of people in their community,” said Mayor Denis Law in authorizing the lowered flags. “This tragedy touches us especially hard here in Renton as we mourn the loss with Officer Cassidy Steed and his family.”

The memorial service for the 19 firefighters is Tuesday in Prescott Valley, Ariz.

The city is supporting the Washington Fire Chiefs who issued this request to fire departments and districts throughout the state. Flags will remain at half staff in Renton until 8 a.m., July 10.
