Renton hosting open house to discuss next 20 years

Information gathered at the open house and through the survey will be used to develop the vision for the Comprehensive Plan.

The City of Renton’s Department of Community and Economic Development is hosting a public open house Feb. 28 at city hall to discuss the city’s future.

The purpose of the open house is for the public to give input on what Renton should be like in 20 years. Interested participants can also take a short online survey at rentonwa.gov/PlanUpdate. Information gathered at the open house and through the survey will be used to develop the vision for the Comprehensive Plan.

Comprehensive Plans establish policies for community growth and development and guide city decision making in several areas: land use, economic development, transportation, parks and recreation, utilities, housing and human services, community planning, and capital facilities.  Setting a community vision is the first step in Renton’s Comprehensive Plan update. Public participation is a key component of this effort.

The City of Renton is updating its Comprehensive Plan in accordance with the Washington State Growth Management Act (GMA) governed by RCW 36.70A. Most jurisdictions in the state are required to adopt a Comprehensive Plan consistent with the GMA and to update their plan every eight years. Renton’s update will take about two years to complete and is due to the state in June 2015.

Anyone who wishes to stay informed about the Comprehensive Plan update as it progresses should send their contact information to: PlanUpdate@rentonwa.gov or call 425-430-6578.

The open house is scheduled for 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers on the 7th floor of Renton City Hall, 1055 S. Grady Way.
