Renton Police Department investigators want to talk with witnesses who personally saw a traffic stop by a state trooper Monday morning on Interstate 405 that led to the trooper firing his weapon.

The 21-year-old Seattle is being held at the King County Jail in downtown Seattle on $50,000 bail.

The trooper pulled over the Seattle man at about 8:55 a.m. for driving alone in the carpool lane in a 2012 Chrysler sedan near the Sunset Boulevard overpass. During the stop, the trooper was notified the car had been reported stolen by Port of Seattle police on March 17, according to court documents.

The trooper tried to arrest the driver, who fled, running over the trooper’s foot with the stolen car, according to Renton police. The Renton Police Department is investigating because the trooper fired his weapon.

No weapon was found in the suspect’s car.

“[The suspect’s] actions placed officers in fear for their safety and caused them to discharge their weapons at him,” according to court documents.

The Seattle man took the North 30th Street exit from the freeway, crashing the vehicle on a steep embankment across 30th Street from Kennydale Elementary School. He fled down a steep hillside toward May Creek, but was captured at 9:15 a.m., 20 minutes after the initial traffic stop.

Today (Wednesday) is the deadline to file charges against the man; his first court appearance was Tuesday. The Renton Reporter will name the man when he has been charged. According to court documents, he is a convicted felon.

Renton police investigators have already spoken with some witnesses to the traffic stop, said Renton Police Detective Robert Onishi. But there may be other witnesses who have “critical details” who haven’t yet contacted police, he said.
