The Renton Regional Fire Authority (RFA) reported its “Significant Incident Monthly Summary” for May, which included 1,735 total incidents.
Renton RFA also reported 13 “significant incidents,” eight “significant EMS calls,” four “significant fire calls,” one “significant special ops call,” and nine “significant malicious false alarm calls.”
The Renton RFA also provided details on several incidents crews responded to as follows:
• On May 1, 2023, Renton RFA responded to a two-car collision with injuries in the area on Benson Road South and Grady Way. Units arrived on the scene and reported a car on fire with all the occupants out of the vehicles. Three patients were reportedly transported to local hospitals. The scene was turned over to Renton Police for investigation.
• On May 6, 2023, Renton RFA responded to a shooting incident at a business area parking lot in the area of the 4000 block of NE 4th Street. Units arrived to find a patient with gunshot wounds, who died at the scene. The incident was turned over to Renton Police for investigation.
• On May 9, 2023, Renton RFA responded to a residential fire in the area on the 13000 block of SE 183rd Street. Units arrived at a two-story home with light smoke coming from the front on the second floor. One resident was reportedly found outside of the house and firefighters escorted another resident outside. Crews put out the fire in one of the upstairs bedrooms, completed a full search and nothing was found in their search. The fire is under investigation by the King County Sheriff’s Department.
• On May 10, 2023, Renton RFA responded to a shooting incident in the area on the 2800 block of NE Sunset Boulevard. Renton police arrived on scene and reported two individuals involved in a shooting after an altercation. Renton RFA crews reportedly wore ballistic vests and waited for clearance from police. Once on scene, fire crews began triage and patient care. One patient reportedly had been shot and transported to a local hospital. The second patient was stable and remained on the scene with Renton police.
• On May 14, 2023, Renton RFA responded to a single-vehicle crash during which the vehicle reportedly rolled over near the 1400 block of Harrington Avenue NE. Units arrived at the vehicle that hit a light pole and landed on its roof. Crews found two injured patients who had made their way out of the car. Both were treated and then transferred to local hospitals.
• On May 14, 2023, Renton RFA responded to a building fire at a church near the 400 block of South 3rd Street. Units arrived on scene and reported a fire on the roof of the carport that was spreading up the exterior wall. Crews put out the fire, and checked the building for fire extension. The cause of the fire was ruled to be “undetermined.”
• On May 16, 2023, Renton RFA responded to a car vs. pedestrian collision near the intersection of SE 176th Street and 155th Avenue SE. Crews arrived on scene to find a hit-and-run incident where a vehicle drove onto the sidewalk and struck a pedestrian and an infant in a stroller. Both patients were treated and transported to local hospitals.
• On May 19, 2023, Renton RFA responded to a building fire at an abandoned home near the 100 block of South Tobin Street. Units arrived on scene to a boarded-up small single-story house with smoke and flames from all sides. Renton Police received a report of an occupant possibly inside. Crews reportedly conducted a search and found no occupants. The incident was turned over to the fire investigator and determined to be incendiary.
• On May 21, 2023, Renton RFA responded to a report of multiple gunshots in near the corner of East Valley Highway and South 180th Street. Renton RFA responded with Renton Police, King County Medic One, and TriMed. Once on scene, crews reportedly found two patients with gunshot wounds and provided treatment. One patient was found in a gas station parking lot. A second patient was located on the east side of East Valley Highway in front of the car dealership. Renton police flagged down medics for a third patient with multiple gunshot wounds. RFA crews assisted with patient care. Patients were transported to local hospitals for care.
• On May 22, 2023, Renton RFA responded to a possible brush fire near the 9800 block of South Carr Road. Crews arrived on scene to an abandoned structure on fire and searched for access as the main access was blocked by a large utility pole across the driveway. Crews moved the pole and began a defensive fire attack extinguishing the fire.
• On May 24, 2023, Renton RFA responded to a suspected biohazard incident near the 1000 block of South Grady Way. Crews arrived on scene at the evidence testing room of the Renton police station, where two police officers reportedly became symptomatic after exposure to an unconfirmed substance. Both officers were treated, and one was transferred to Valley Medical Center. The Renton RFA HazMat team began examining substances in three rooms and tested the exterior of packages to ensure no further exposure would occur then neutralized the evidence locker and affected rooms.
• On May 31, 2023, Renton RFA responded to a motor vehicle collision with injuries on Southbound I-405. Crews arrived on scene and found a two-vehicle rollover accident. Responders reportedly treated the patients, and they were transferred to local hospitals. A second patient was trapped underneath the vehicle. Crews assessed and treated the patient while waiting for extrication. Bellevue Fire was assigned to help rescue. The patient was transferred to Medic One and transported to Harborview Medical Center, accompanied by one Renton RFA firefighter. The scene was turned over to the Washington State Patrol.
