A Renton sailor was reported missing in Afghanistan by the Department of Defense Tuesday.

Petty Officer Third Class Jarod Newlove, 25, was with another sailor, when the two went missing July 23.

The other sailor, Justin McNeley, 30, of Wheatridge, Colo., died from wounds sustained during an incident. His body was found two days later.

The Taliban came forward saying they killed one sailor and captured another after a firefight in that area, according to media reports.

The Department of Defense hasn’t confirmed if Newlove was taken captive. Search and recovery was still ongoing and the incident was still under investigation as of Wednesday.

The Newlove family and Navy requested that the media not release any personal information about Newlove and his family “as this information in the wrong hands could jeopardize Jarod’s safety and well-being,” said spokesperson Sean Hughes in a press release.

“Speaking on behalf of the Newlove family, they would like to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers,” according to the release. “They want the public to know that all of your support means so much to their family.”

Newlove joined the Navy March 16, 2004. He then completed his duty and joined the reserve in December 2008. In 2009, he was called back to duty and by December he was in Afghanistan.

He was attached to a mission specifically because of his skill sets, said Navy spokesperson Lt. Justin Cole.

He was listed as a culinary specialist. However, it’s likely he wasn’t recalled as a cook, Cole said.

Newlove’s commendations include the Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Sea Service Deployment ribbon.
