The Renton School District Board of Directors is soliciting letters of interest from applicants to represent District No. 4, which encompasses the central portion of the school district. The position is vacant due to the resignation of Director Gloria Hodge, effective late January 2023.

Here is Hodge’s statement published on the Renton School District website:

“When I first moved to Skyway, I knew I wanted in some way to serve and help make a difference within this community, and in the greater Renton community. I never thought that it would lead to me serving on the School Board for 7 years. And yet it did!

The community where I live and represent is very dear to me. I appreciate the energy, families, and diversity from all walks of life. With its richness in languages and culture, love and resiliency, this is an amazing and vibrant community. Every family works hard to help their children achieve. This was my impetus to serve; to support their efforts, to be their voice and to relate, mirror and listen to the needs and challenges of students and families.

As the daughter of one of the first Vietnamese immigrants from my hometown, it was crucial for me to witness that all students’ goals, dreams, and education flourish. It was imperative to me to be part of an organization that works to remove barriers and offer the best possible education and resources for our students. I believe our District has made progress in this commitment. I am confident the next appointee will represent what our area, District and community need to succeed and shine.

I am thankful to have served the Renton School District community. I appreciate working with my board colleagues, Superintendent Pattenaude, his Cabinet and so many other staff members. Thank you to all Renton School District staff for your dedication to students and families every day. My thanks also go to former Interim Superintendent Jarvis and former school board members for our work together.”

Application packets are due by Feb. 15. The appointee will serve the remaining elected term through November 2023. At that time, interested candidates must run a campaign to be elected to the seat.
