Marty Wine, the City of Renton assistant chief administrative officer, has been selected as the new city manager for Tigard, Ore.
The Tigard City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to hire Wine, who started working for Renton in 2006. She’s now negotiating an employment agreement with Tigard, which would include her start date.
Leaving Renton is “bittersweet,” Wine said Wednesday, calling her decision to leave difficult. “I love Renton.”
She grew up in Bellevue but has a sister in the Portland area, not far from Tigard, which has about 47,600 residents.
Renton is a model for other communities, including its many community partnerships, she said. “I am building a lot on what I learned here,” she said.
Her new job is a chance to grow professionally, she said. Like Renton, Tigard has its own growth issues, she said. Wine has extensive experience in the public and private sectors dealing with issues such as annexations and incorporations.
Tigard, she said, has “a solid foundation of great city services. Their staff is incredible in the way they provide services and work with the public,” she said.
The other finalist for the city manager’s job was Derek Todd, who prior to Wine’s employment with Renton was the assistant to Renton’s chief administrative officer, Jay Covington. Most recently Todd was administrator of the Town of Frederick, Colo., a community of about 8,700 residents.
“Marty has been a tremendous asset to the city and to me,” said Mayor Denis Law. “She is going to be missed, no question about it.”
He described Wine as thorough and “very conscientious,” who was dealt with complex issues facing the city.
Law said he hasn’t decided whether he will replace Wine. “I am analyzing every single position that comes up in the department because of the tight economy,” he said.
Prior to joining the City of Renton, Wine worked for Berk and Associates, a consulting firm in Seattle that’s often contracted to provide analysis of annexations and incorporations. She also was a budget analyst for the City of Bellevue and King County.
Wine and Todd emerged as the top finalists following interviews with six candidates from a field 87 candidates identified nationwide, according to press release from the City of Tigard.
