The following information was compiled from Renton Police Department case reports.

Three suspicious-acting men who drove a blue Cadillac into a “service road” area near Smithers Road and the I-405 overpass caught the attention of a neighbor Sept. 11.

They were looking at what turned out to be a stolen safe.

The neighbor flagged down an officer who saw the three men, all wearing white shirts, standing on the access road. They started walking away and the officer radioed other officers in the area who were also investigating.

The officer found the Cadillac DeVille, its rear window shattered, and its ignition damaged, possibly by a screwdriver. A jewelry box was found in a blue duffle bag, containing costume jewelry, an AARP card, photos and personal documents.

A 3-foot by 3-foot metal safe was laying on the road, where two of the men, now in custody, were seen standing. On the ground were a sledgehammer, gloves and bolt cutters. The safe was damaged but not open.

Two were interviewed and one admitted to hitting the safe with a sledgehammer. Each offered slightly different stories on how they got there. The safe and car were taken as evidence. The two were released because there wasn’t enough evidence to arrest them.

But the case was referred to the Kent Police Department, after a Kent man identified the safe and jewelry box as his. One of the two men interviewed in Renton later dropped off a letter at the Renton Police Department, claiming that he owned the Cadillac.

Trespasser came back to Safeway because he’s hungry

A 37-year-old Renton man was trespassed for stealing from the Safeway store on South Second Avenue but he returned on Sept. 11 because he was hungry.

The man was spotted at the store’s deli by a security officer, who called police. The police officer took him out to the parking lot and asked why he keeps coming back to the store.

“I was just hungry,” he replied. The officer asked why he couldn’t get food elsewhere. He replied, “Ya, I guess.”

He was booked into the SCORE regional jail for investigation of second-degree criminal trespass.

Shots fired at SUV in lot

Someone apparently shot up a Toyota Land Cruiser parked at a car lot on Rainier Avenue South sometime when the business was closed for the weekend earlier this month.

Small holes were found in the passenger windows and in the vehicle’s interior, dashboard and the seats.

No bullets were found.

They were just looking for some gas

Two men standing in a Renton man’s driveway at about 11 p.m. Sept. 9 told the resident they were just looking for gas when he confronted them.

But the resident spotted a golf bag filled with clubs and a longboard skateboard on the ground next to his fence.

He then grabbed a roof gun from the bed of his truck and told his wife to call police.

The two men fled in a dark blue 2009 Subaru Legacy.

Wandering pit bull reunited with owner

An officer picked up a pit bull wandering in traffic on Northeast Fourth Street on Sept. 11.

The dog was friendly but dehydrated and didn’t have any identification. The officer gave him food and water at the city shops and the dog was placed in the city kennels for safekeeping. The dog was identified based on a chip. His name is Max, a 13-year-old Stafford terrier-type dog.

The chip registration indicated the owner lives in Seattle. However, she now lives in Renton. She was issued a written warning for violating the city leash law. She bought an animal license for Max.

$2,000 in belongings stolen from home

About $2,500 worth of personal belongings were stolen from a residence on Ferndale Avenue Northeast Sept. 12, after the burglars entered through an unlocked window.

Upon returning home, the resident found several bedroom doors open. Missing were a laptop computer, iPad, gold- and silver-plated jewelry, a watch and two purses.

Shoeprints were found in the dirt outside the window.
