The Renton Salvation Army benefit raised about $50,000 for the food bank and the Renton Community Supper June 29.
“It’s a great example of Renton supporting the Salvation Army and issues of hunger in our area,” said Salvation Army Capt. Terry Masango.
About 200 people attended the dinner at New Life Church, before a free benefit concert by the EriAm Sisters.
“State representative Marcie Maxwell did a fantastic job with her speech,” Masango said.
Most of the money was donated from local businesses.
However, the Kaye Smith Foundation and the Holt family were the top givers, donating about $5,000 each.
Volunteer work and in-kind donations for the event made up about $17,000. The event only cost about $4,000 to organize, Masango said.
The fundraiser comes about a month after the opening of the Renton Community Supper at the Salvation Army Church.
The dinner, organized by a group of Renton churches, is now regularly feeding about 60 people three days a week with the hope of expanding.
What money isn’t spent on the supper will go toward the Salvation Army Renton Rotary Food Bank, Masango said.
The food bank is asking for volunteers this summer, to help fill in for those on vacation. To volunteer call 425-255-5969.
