Jarod Lane’s guilty plea doesn’t bring much closure for the parents of Jessica Scholl, who was killed, prosecutors say, in her Renton home last May.

Doug Scholl, Jessica’s father, expressed some relief but not an end to feeling the loss of his daughter, during a phone interview this past Friday.

“I think that’s a much better way, for me and the family to not go through a trial and relive everything,” he said.

Lane pleaded guilty Sept. 19 to first-degree murder and first-degree arson in the slaying of his former girlfriend, Jessica. He faces 25 to 33 years in prison, when he is sentenced on Oct. 18.

Scholl wants Lane to get a longer sentence, but said there are too many things to weigh when going to trial.

Since May 2012, the trial has been delayed with a series of case-setting appointments and back and forth between the defense and the prosecution, Scholl said.

For most of the court proceedings, Lane did not have to appear in court and didn’t, according to Scholl. Jessica’s father attended many of the proceedings because he wanted to see Jarod’s face.

“I don’t want him to see that I hurt; I want him to see I have a life and I’m moving on,” Scholl said. “(It) doesn’t matter how many years he gets, in the end it won’t bring my daughter back.”

Now Scholl waits for the sentencing with his wife Stephanie. They will write letters to Superior Court Judge Mary Yu, urging her to rule in favor of the maximum time allowed.

The Scholls were told by prosecutors not to consume their lives with the developments of the case during the year and a half they waited. The couple is about finished rebuilding their home in Renton, close to Lindbergh High School. Construction started last April and the Scholls have been displaced ever since.

“It’s been a long time,” he said, about returning to the home. “I really want her (Judge Yu) to remember Jessica Scholl and who she was.”
