Community members and letter carriers protested the planned closure of the Skyway Post Office Wednesday.

The National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 79, religious and community members rallied to save the post office at 7633 S. 126th St.,

The U.S. Post Service has put 39 post offices across the state on a review for closure list. The Postal Service has also been reducing its staff during the past several years and cut billions of dollars from its costs, according to a press release.

In addition to the letter carriers, the Rev. Richard Rivers of the Greater Skyway Community Church and members of the Church with No Walls attended  the rally.

“This neighborhood is made up of more than 60 percent senior citizens,” said Rivers. “If they take this post office away, it will be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. These seniors will have nowhere to come together, to connect with their community or to keep in contact with the outside world. Not everyone is online – these folks depend on their mail service and they are dependent on this Skyway Post Office.”

The rally was held in conjunction with the Washington State Labor Council’s week of action on creating and maintaining jobs.
