Due to the expected low temperatures early next week, the Renton Cold Weather Shelter will be opened.
The National Weather Service in Seattle is predicting snow showers in the lowlands Saturday and Sunday. Daily accumulations are expected to be no more than half-inch; however, higher elevations could see more.Lows will be in the low 30s, with highs in the upper 30s.
On Monday stronger and wetter systems will move into the area, with the chance for significant snow, according to the weather service. What track those systems would take was uncertain on Friday.
The weather systems will clear out stagnant air that has trapped pollutants in the region, resulting in a burn ban.
The cold-weather shelter will be opened at the Harambee Church, 316 S. Third St., Monday, Jan. 16, and Tuesday, Jan. 17, because of overnight low temperatures and possibly snow.
The church will provide separate areas for men and women and families. The shelter will be operated by Catholic Community Services staff, volunteers from Harambee Church and the Renton community.
It will be open from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. both days. The shelter is safe, confidential and allows walk-ins with food provided. The City of Renton offers the following tips for dealing with cold weather:
• Residents are asked to be careful and remain in their homes for their own safety. • To stay warm, wear extra clothing and use extra blankets.
• Dress appropriately before going outdoors. The air temperature does not have to be below freezing for someone to experience cold emergencies such as hypothermia and frostbite.
• Make sure to keep your gas tank near full to avoid ice in the tank and fuel lines. Keep extra blankets in the trunk in the event that you are stranded and have to wait for help.
• Prevent water pipes from freezing and thaw them if they do freeze.
• Stock your emergency car kit, especially with a battery operated radio, water, blankets and non-perishable foods.
