It’s officially summer! The weather is warm, the city is bustling and it’s time to have some fun! Here are some precautionary tips for seniors that will ensure you’re safe and healthy while you enjoy the festivities of the season!
STAY HYDRATED
Make sure you drink plenty of water. Dehydration can cause decreased mobility, weakness, nausea and fainting. Check to see if any of your medication leaves you more susceptible to dehydration.
PROTECT YOUR SKIN
Wear sunscreen and take a hat with you if you’re heading outdoors. Since skin is prone to dryness as one ages, apply moisturizer regularly. If you’re going for a hike or a walk, keep a bottle of bug spray on you.
WEAR APPROPRIATE CLOTHING
If the sun is shining, stick to light-colored, loose-fitting clothes. They will not only keep you cool, but also allow you to move around freely.
LISTEN TO YOUR BODY
According to Center for Disease Control and Prevention, people aged 65 and older are more prone to heat stress and heat-related illnesses. If you have a rapid pulse, nausea, dizziness, weakness, muscle cramps and/or heavy sweating, immediately speak up and seek help. Stay in cool, shaded areas and get medical assistance as soon as possible.
