Three panhandlers battle over Hardie/Sunset corner | POLICE BLOTTER PART 2

A 46-year-old Renton man has staked out the corner of Hardie Avenue Southwest and Southwest Sunset Boulevard to panhandle. He asked one of his friends to go with him to confront a 57-year-old Renton man who took over his spot early evening on Sept. 22.

The following information was compiled from Renton Police Department incident reports.

The corner of Hardie Avenue Southwest and Southwest Sunset Boulevard apparently is worth fighting for.

A 46-year-old Renton man has staked out that corner to panhandle. He asked one of his friends to go with him to confront a 57-year-old Renton man who took over his spot early evening on Sept. 22.

Because he walks with a cane, he arrived after his friend, who told the interloper to leave. The 57-year-old felt threatened, so he swung a milk crate at the two men, cutting his own finger.

The 46-year-old was cut on the finger but didn’t retaliate. He denied using his cane to hit the man with the crate.

An officer caught up with the friend, who had walked away and was drunk.

It was unclear who was the primary aggressor, so no one was arrested.

However, this is the second time in two months an officer has been called to a dispute over who can panhandle at that corner. The 46-year-old told the officer there’s a street code of conduct about who works which corner. The officer isn’t going to follow that code.

Officers also noticed several signs next to the milk crate listing beverages and prices. The crate had a bag of ice and several small cans.

The 57-year-old was cited for peddling without a license.

HOME BURGLARIES: Two young teenagers were somehow involved in the burglary of their homes, including the theft of a gun safe and gun, but the thefts were soon discovered.

One of the teens, who are friends, was angry because he had been kicked out of the house and had asked someone else to burglarize his house.

One of the burglaries occurred on Sept. 26, when the gun safe, gun, laptop, three tablet computers and a 60-inch TV were stolen. The other home was burglarized twice, including the theft of a rifle.

The teens’ parents are also acquainted and soon discovered stolen items in their sons’ bedrooms. One bedroom had the gun, gun safe and 60-inch TV.

Because all the stolen items were eventually returned, no one wanted to press charges. The teens are 14 and 15.

NO CHIP FOR YORKIE: A Renton Police officer took a young Yorkie dog found wandering on Northwest Sixth Street to a veterinarian on Sept. 23 to scan for an identifying microchip.

The dog was clean and groomed, but the reporting party didn’t want to keep it because it chased her chickens.

A microchip wasn’t found, so the dog was taken to the animal-control shelter.

OFFICER SECURES WINDOW: A window was broken out Sept. 26 on a home’s bathroom on Southeast 161st Street, possibly by a man seen jumping fences in the neighborhood.

The resident discovered the broken window and a piece of cement after returning home. Nothing was stolen but she was certain he got into the house.

Another resident took a video of the suspect on a cell phone.

An officer replaced the bulbs on a motion-sensor light and secured the window with plywood.
