All the hats are now in the ring and it looks like there will be one primary and two races for the city council and two school board seats on the ballot this year.
Friday marked the end of candidate filing week in Washington and this fall’s races are officially set.
Of the five Renton City Council seats up for election this year, three will run unopposed, one incumbent will face a challenger and one incumbent’s decision not to seek a third term will create a three-way race for his seat.
There will be a primary in the race for Greg Taylor’s seat on the council, Position 4. While Taylor opted not to run for a third term, Ryan McIrvin threw his name into consideration for the seat, setting up an August primary between himself, Charles D. Seil and Monique Taylor-Swan, with the top-two vote-getters moving on to the general election in November.
The only other contested council seat this year belongs to incumbent Marcie Palmer, who is seeking a fourth term on the council. Running against Palmer is Carol Ann Witschi.
Councilmembers Ed Prince, Don Persson and Ruth Perez, who must run to keep the seat to which she was appointed in December, are all running unopposed.
Mayor Denis Law is also running unopposed.
On the school board side, it appears Wednesday’s surprise resignation of Superintendent Merri Rieger spurred a few candidates to jump into the ring. Prior to Rieger’s announcement, all three school board incumbents were running unopposed, but now one has withdrawn from contention and the other two face challengers.
Denise L. Eider has withdrawn her name from contention of Director District No. 4. Larry Crim is now running unopposed for that seat.
In Director District No. 1, Todd Franceschina is now facing a challenge from Sarah Sanoy-Wright.
In District Mo. 3, Lynn Demarias now faces a challenge from Larry Wright.
Both Wright and Sanoy-Wright registered from the same address and same email address.
The Renton Reporter is attempting to contact the candidates this week.
The primary is Aug. 4. The general election is Nov. 3.
