Vandals dropped two picnic tables from the walkway next to the downtown Renton Library last week – right on top of redds or nests of returning sockeye salmon.
City maintenance workers carefully moved the two picnic tables from the middle of the river to a bank. The tables were then brought from the river.
The city in the past hasn’t had such trouble with vandals dropping tables into the river, according to Terry Higashiyama, administrator of the city’s Department of Community Services. A similar incident involving a single table occurred several weeks ago.
The city is looking at different ways to better secure the tables at Liberty Park. Typically, only a few tables are at the park over the winter.
Anyone seeing vandalism is asked to call 911.
