Volunteers raised about $14,600 for Vision House, a woman and children’s shelter, in an annual garage sale this weekend.
The Bargain Bash Garage Sale filled the parking lot of their childcare Center in the Highlands and overflowed into a nearby field.
Raising about $10,000 more than last year, the success was a great surprise, said Vision House’s Mary Burton.
“We just let people set their own price and make a donation,” Burton said of changes this year. “A lot of people gave more than we probably would have asked them for.”
About 150 volunteers donated and stored goods, which were first offered up to the families in need, before they were sold as a fundraiser.
“It’s very much a community driven event,” Burton said.
Sylvia Holden, Bargain Bash coordinator, has led this effort for many years.
The sale was split up into various stations, including Manland, an area full of tools and electronics.
Founded 20 years ago by husband and wife John and Susan Camerer, Vision House provides housing, child care and support services to homeless mothers and children, and separately to men recovering from drug or alcohol abuse.
Residents set goals and meet weekly with a case manager in order to gain the skills and confidence to become self-sufficient and avoid homelessness, poverty and abuse in the future.
Since 1990, nearly 700 homeless children, women and men have benefited from Vision House services.
