Waste Management on Thursday gave the City of Renton a formal contingency plan for collection of garbage, recycling, and yard waste for Renton residents affected by the strike by the Teamsters’ Local 117 and Local 174.
This strike does not impact residents served by Allied Waste/Republic Services nor does it affect the King County transfer stations.
Waste Management has provided the following plan to the city:
GARBAGE:
• Missed garbage collections from Wednesday will be picked up on Saturday, July 28.
• Missed garbage collections from Thursday will be picked up on Friday, July 27.
RECYCLING AND YARD WASTE:
• Missed collections will be picked up at double the amount at no extra charge on the next regularly scheduled collection day.
Customers may also place their garbage at the curb on their regularly scheduled day and leave it there until it is collected.
Under the city’s contract with Waste Management, performance fees or fines may be applied for any missed collection beginning the week following a strike, and it is the city’s intention to track collections and apply the fines should WMI fail to meet their contractual obligation, according to a city press release.
The City of Renton’s Solid Waste Utility will not be issuing refunds to customers during this initial period, as a collection contingency is in place similar to the city’s inclement weather policy. The city will forward all customer calls regarding missed collections to the Waste Management Call Center at 1-800-592-9995.
The city contracts with Waste Management for residential, multifamily and commercial garbage, recycling and organics collection services. City solid waste customers are encouraged to stay informed on the progress of the strike and service interruptions by visiting the Waste Management website at www.wmnorthwest.com/servicedelays. Questions or concerns should be directed to Waste Management at 1-800-592-9995.
