Sheriff’s detectives are warning that a woman who opened fire in a West Hill group-home kitchen Wednesday evening is armed and dangerous and still on the loose.
The home’s owner, 59, was hit in the stomach with a bullet and a second one grazed her head. She was taken to Harborview Medical Center, where she underwent surgery and is expected to survive, according to Sgt. John Urquhart, a spokesman for the King County Sheriff’s Office.
The Sheriff’s Office has identified the woman as Ayanna A. Shamari, 51, who lived in the group home in the 8500 block of South 117th Street.
At about 5:15 p.m., she walked into the kitchen and in what detectives are describing as an unprovoked attack sharted shooting, according to Urquhart. He said the woman has mental-health issues.
“Detectives are comparing the woman to the Capital Hill ax murderer from last week,” Urquhart said in a press release. “This suspect is extremely paranoid as well.”
Three other people were in the kitchen at the same time, including a young child. The only other injury was to a man who received cuts as he ran through a closed, sliding-glass door to escape the gunfire, according to Urquhart.
Detectives believe Shamari set fire to her second-floor bedroom just before the shooting or just afterward. She fled in her 1996 Ford Windstar van. The van is beige, Washington license 477RNZ.
The woman sometimes sells used books out of the back of the van, according to Urquhart.
Shamari is black, 5-foot-4 and about 110 lbs. Anyone who sees her or the car is asked to call the King County Sheriff’s Office at 206-296-3311 (24 hours) or 911.
