Wizard’s Keep Games robbed for the fifth time in three years

A GoFundMe has been made to help with the costs of damages that insurance won’t cover.

For the fifth time in three years, Wizard’s Keep Games, a tabletop game shop in the Fairwood area of Renton, was broken into and robbed of thousands of dollars worth of inventory. Now, the shop is moving to a new location in another city.

According to Wizard’s Keep owner, Jason Bessonette, the robbery happened at 5:27 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 19, when a white Toyota truck rammed into the front of the door. The suspects used a saw to cut through the inner gate and then stole $11,000 to $12,000 worth of comic books.

“One guy went straight to grabbing the comic books and one guy went behind the register but didn’t take anything there,” Bessonette said.

Insurance will cover the inventory, but not the front doors which need to be completely replaced.

“The doors have already been replaced twice,” said Bessonette, referring to the four previous break-ins. “We’ve lost about $40,000 in inventory in total and it’s going to be about $10,000 for the windows. I’ve spent almost $20,000 just on locks and gates and doors.”

“It keeps happening and it’s awful because the community is awesome,” said Andrew Pooler, who has been working at Wizard’s Keep for about four months. “I’ve been coming here since they opened over five years ago.”

Bessonette said the repeated break-ins are extremely frustrating. “The second time, the break-in was like ‘Ocean’s 11,’ they broke through two walls to get to us. That time, we were able to recover some of the stuff,” he added.

During another break-in, Bessonette said the thieves got away with a Pokémon binder, which contained over $5,000 worth of cards.

A GoFundMe has been made to help cover the costs of the doors and to help with security for the store’s new location near Panther Lake in Kent. According to Bessonette, the new location will be facing towards the street and will have better security than the current location.
