August 28, 1925 – March 28, 2025
Dorothy Lile Luther, 99, passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 28, 2025. She led an active life filled with golf, skiing and world travel. Her friends and family mourn her loss but rejoice in her joining her brother and parents, who have been keeping an eye on her from above.
D’Lile was born in Topeka, Kansas, on August 28, 1925, to Claude and Lyda Moyer Lile.
She grew up in Topeka with her brother Moyer and her parents until 1938. The family’s heart was broken when Moyer drowned before his high school graduation, and they soon moved to Fort Madison, Iowa, where D’Lile later graduated from Fort Madison High School in Iowa.
After graduation, D’Lile became a radio operator for Northwest Orient Airlines after training in Kansas City. She wanted to become a pilot, but at that time women were not allowed to fly in combat, so she joined the airline industry instead. D’Lile worked for Northwest for twenty years until 1963, when she married Robert Luther, a widower with two children, Kristen and Stevan. She and Bob were married for over fifty years until his passing in 2013.
D’Lile was an avid golfer and skier. When she was working in Portland Oregon, she spent many happy days skiing on the slopes of Mount Hood, as well as the slopes in the Alps in Europe. She also golfed wherever she went, maintaining an 11 handicap. For many years even after retirement, D’Lile voluntarily worked at the LPGA Safeco tournaments as a communications coordinator.
D’Lile is survived by her son, Dr. Stevan (Suzanne) Luther, of LaCenter, Washington, daughter, Kristen (Michael) Meyer of Buffalo, Wyoming, five grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Interment will take place in Topeka Kansas.
