Grace Caroline Hanson, age 99, passed away at her residence in Newcastle, WA on Sunday, June 30, 2019. She was born January 1, 1920 in Center, North Dakota to the late Alfred and Hulda Clausnitzer.
Grace had many jobs including being “Rosie the Riveter” for Boeing during World War II, operating a retail store with her late husband, Arthur, called Gambles in Hunter, ND, and running a home daycare in Federal Way, WA. Later in her life she volunteered at Renton Lutheran Church and was a 20-year volunteer at the Renton Senior Center. In fact, she was such a great volunteer that in 2002 she was awarded the President’s Volunteer Service Gold Award, in 2013 the Governor’s Service Award as one of Washington State’s Volunteers of the Year and in 2015 honored for years of dedication, walking and volunteering in the Renton CROP Hunger walk. She loved reading books, especially Debbie Macomber and religious themes, gardening, watching the Hallmark Chanel, puzzles, beanbag baseball, bingo, playing cards with friends, and collecting elephants.
Survivors include her beloved children Norel (Evelyne) Hanson of Renton, WA, Cheryl Hanson of Fort Collins, CO, Merle (Lorilee) Hanson of Issaquah, WA; siblings Helmeth (Beverly) Clausnitzer of Bismarck, ND, Viola Peterson of Tacoma, WA, Leroy (Dorothy) Clausnitzer of Burnside, MN, Wilbert Clausnitzer of Bismarck, ND; grandchildren Kylie Caraher, Keri Caraher, Katia Long, Nikki Dziedzic, Jordan Hanson; great-grandchildren Jackson Long, Ava Long and Jude Dziedzic. Grace was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur, parents Alfred and Hulda, Siblings Linda Cawley, Harold, Richard, Edwin, and Alfred, and grandchild Thomas Christian “TC” Rockwell.
Friends are invited to Graveside Services on Tuesday, July 16, 2019 at 10:15 a.m. at Tahoma National Cemetery, 18600 SE 240th St., Kent, WA 98042 and to Memorial Services the same day at 1:00 p.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1024 Monroe Ave NE, Renton, WA 98056. Services entrusted to Edline-Yahn & Covington Funeral Chapel, Kent, WA.
