Joseph Upshaw

Joseph Upshaw, 90, of Renton, WA, passed away on July 20, 2011. He was born on September 5, 1920 in Forest City, Arkansas. On August 14, 1950, he married Cora Clementine Jones, who preceded him in death in 2006. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War, lifetime member of VFW. He was employed and retired from the U.S. Government and employed and retired from K-Mart. He owned his own landscaping business for many years. He was also an independent semi-professional photographer. Joseph Upshaw was a long-time member of Mount Zion Baptist Church and deacon emeritus. In his recent years, he enjoyed bowling, square dancing, and going fishing in Canada and Alaska. He was a Mason Prince Hall, 33rd degree. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Vannetta and Gene Cash of Sammamish; son and fiance’, Clarence (Nick) and Florica Radu of Seattle; niece Havelock Jones and grandnephew Shaka Forest of Seattle; cousins, Shirley Hill of Kent and Linda Upshaw of Federal Way; other relatives live in Arkansas. A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 20, 11:00 a.m. at Mount Zion Baptist Church, 19th & Madison, Seattle. Cremation took place at Greenwood Memorial Park, Renton, WA. In lieu of flowers, dontations may be made in Deacon Upshaw’s memory to the diaconate at Mount Zion Baptist Church.
