Here’s an early look at the fall season for Renton’s boys and girls cross country and girls soccer teams.
Cross country
The Lindbergh boys won the Seamount championship, while Mount Rainier won the girls title. On the girls side Renton placed second, Hazen placed third and Lindbergh placed fourth. For the boys Lindbergh placed first, Renton placed second and Hazen placed third.
Renton
The boys team ran at the 3A state meet and placed 15th. Chun Chan was the top finisher at 50th overall. However, Chan, Clayton Barnes, Kurt Untalan, Seth Trowbridge, Christopher Lee and Roman Naval were all seniors last season. That leaves junior Anthony Martinez (126th overall) as the lone state returner for 2008’s team.
The girls team ran at the 3A state meet and placed 13th. Elaine Nguyen was the top finisher at 43rd overall, but she graduated. Adrienne Hardin and Krista Chan also graduated. Misa Yoshioka, Victoria Fernandez and Liliana Ponce will return as seniors. Carina Barnes will be back as a sophomore.
Lindbergh
The boys team ran at the 3A state meet and placed eighth. Trevor Thompson was the team’s top finisher, at ninth overall. Thompson will be a junior this season. Matt Miland and Joe Patti placed 35th and 36th, respectively, and will both be back as seniors this season. Nate Reitz, James Cornell and Thanh Nguyen all will return as juniors. Nate Tankedi will return as a sophomore, meaning all seven of the Eagles boys team will be back on the team in 2008.
Hazen
The Highlanders had two individuals race at the 3A state
meet. David Hinckley placed 86th and will be back as a senior. Jeff Hinckley placed 98th and will also be back as a senior.
The girls team sent Michelle Wnek to the 3A state meet. Wnek placed 22nd and fourth among freshman. She will return this year as a sophomore.
Girls soccer
Lindbergh
The Eagles placed third in the league with a 10-3-2 overall and a 10-2-2 Seamount record. Lindbergh’s season ended with a loss to Camas in the bi-district tournament.
Note to note: Goalie Kenisha Macklin graduated and will play at Portland State this year. Macklin recorded seven shutouts, scored six goals and added three assists. The Eagles will need someone to step up and fill Macklin’s spot both in the goal and in leadership.
Hazen
The Highlanders finished fifth in the league with a 6-8 overall and league record.
Note to note: Hazen went 3-1 in the final four games of the 2007 season, outscoring opponents 18-1. Twelve of the 13 players that scored goals last season will be back this season with Anna Shure being the only senior to score last season. This young squad developed together late in the season and showed a hint of what can happen this year if they continue to get better.
Renton
The Indians finished seventh in the league with a 3-11-1 overall record and a 3-11 league record.
Note to note: Coaches Duane Nakamura and Dayo Oyetuga are still in the midst of rebuilding the Renton soccer programs. They led the boys team to the SPSL/Seamount playoffs last season and a similar leap from the girls team is possible.
