Renton’s Achoki Moikobu hit a basket and free throw with six seconds left to give the Indians the lead and the 49-47 win against Hazen Tuesday.

“It was a good game, a good battle between two teams,” said Renton boys basketball coach Rick Comer. “The rivalry is back between Renton and Hazen.”

The win seals a playoff trip for Renton (9-8 overall, 9-4 Seamount) and puts Hazen (11-7, 7-7) at risk of missing the playoffs.

Hazen scored just 13 points in the first half and trailed by six heading into the third quarter.

“We came out flat,” said Hazen coach James Olive. “But our defense kept us in it.”

Hazen’s Decourious Sampson made a scoop shot off the backboard with eight seconds left to give Hazen a 47-46 lead.

Renton called a timeout and Comer didn’t hesitate to turn to assistant coach Rashaad Powell.

“I looked at him and said, ‘You’re on,’” Comer said.

Renton lost a close, 64-62 game to West Seattle Dec. 28 when the Indians couldn’t come up with a good play in the final seconds.

Since then the Indians have worked on three-, five- and seven-second plays in practice. Comer said that Powell drew one up that “worked like a miracle” the first time in practice.

Powell put in the play and Renton’s Josh Jenkins tossed an in-bounds pass to Moikobu. Moikobu made the shot and was fouled. He made the free throw too.

With six seconds left, Hazen ran down and Sampson’s three-point attempt went in and out.

Darrin Briggs led the Indians with 14 points. Joseph Powell scored nine and Moikobu scored seven.

R.J. Magar led Hazen with 13 points. Sampson scored 11.

“I still feel like we’re one of the best teams in the league,” Olive said. “Even though our record doesn’t put us up there.”
