After cruising to a 65-10 win against Tacoma May 15, one thing is clear for the Liberty Rugby Football Club: They are ready for the rematch.

The Patriots will face Chuckanut again May 22 at Magnuson Park in Seattle with the state title on the line. Liberty fell to Chuckanut 29-26 May 8 for the team’s first in-state loss in more than two years.

Against Tacoma, Liberty built a 55-0 lead then put in younger players for much of the game.

“Tacoma was pretty beat up,” said Liberty coach Jeff Candler. “They showed a lot of courage, but at the end of the day we were just too much for them.”

Simi Ratukalou, Alex Kaser, Chandler Jenkins, Jesse Evans and Kelly Bolduc had strong games for Liberty.

The Patriots seemed unbeatable earlier this season before losing star Tei Staladi to a broken foot, during the team’s East-Coast trip.

“He is a dynamic player and a big part of of the team that we were,” Candler said. “With him and Simi together we were completely unstoppable. But they’re responding to it OK and seem to be coming around.”

Liberty and Chuckanut will meet for the state title for the third straight year.

“We’re really evenly matched with Chuckanut and we really respect them,” Candler said. “I expect to win. If we lose it’s going to take a great effort from them to beat us.”

Liberty’s U16 team is also playing for a state title Saturday after a bye last week.
