The Liberty Patriots Boys soccer team is in the midst of an impressive postseason run that has already led them to the second round of the state tournament.
On Tuesday, the Patriots needed penalty kicks to get by Anacortes 3-2 after the teams were knotted at 2 at the end of regulation. Ethan Diaz and Tyler Jensen scored the goals for the Patriots in the 31st and 41st minute, respectively to give Liberty a 2-0 lead, but Anacortes rallied back, scoring two in the last two minutes of play to send the game into penalty kicks. Liberty outshot Anacortes 10-3 in the game.
The win set up a second-round match-up with the winner of Wednesday’s R.A. Long – Archbishop Murphy game (results were too late for this edition of the Renton reporter).
Liberty earned their spot in the state tourney with a 3-0 win over Tyee on May 16 at Franklin Pierce Stadium. Nate Steenis, Noah Anderson and Michael Daly scored for the Patriots and Griffin Lockhart had two assists.
