Boys basketball: Hazen starts 2-0; Renton 0-2

Hazen

The Highlanders earned two big wins against Kennedy Dec. 4 and Cleveland Dec. 2 to start the year.

Hazen (2-0) pulled away from Cleveland in the second quarter, then sealed the game with a big fourth quarter to win 65-42.

Dewitt Kasa scored 17. R.J. Magar added 11. Frankie Johnson and Decourious Sampson each scored 10.

A big third quarter was the difference for Hazen against Kennedy. The Highlanders outscored the Lancers 19-9 in the third on the way to a 73-65 win.

Magar scored 20, Kasa 19. Johnson added 13 and Sampson 10.

Renton

Renton fell to two familiar opponents in Lake Washington and Foster to start the season.

The Indians (0-2) met Lake Washington Dec. 3 and lost 52-45. The Kangaroos are coached by former Lindbergh coach Barry Johnson.

Lake Washington held Renton to two second-quarter points. The Indians made a late push by outscoring the Kangs 18-8 in the fourth quarter.

Josh Jenkins led Renton with 14 points. Achoki Moikobu scored 10.

Lake Washington’s Dallas Searles led all scorers with 17.

Renton’s 64-58 loss to Foster Dec. 5 was a back-and-forth game.

Renton trailed through the first two quarters, took the lead with a big third quarter, then lost it in the fourth.

Moikobu led all scorers with 25 points. Joseph Powell scored 11.
