Four athletes from the Cascade Canoe and Kayak Racing Team, based at the City of Renton boathouse, helped Team USA win at the Lake Placid International Regatta in Lake Placid, N.Y. July 2-4.
Wilbert and Matthew Lam, of Renton, plus Caleb Chuck and Michael Weyna of Mercer Island all made the US National Team out of Cascade.
Weyna competed in six events and teamed with Graham Roper, Brynn Munday and Dylan Puckett to win the Men’s Juvenile K-4 1000-meter race.
Matthew Lam and Caleb Chuck also earned a win when they teamed with Gavin Ross and Zach Guay to take first in the Men’s Juvenile C-4 500-meter race.
The Lake Placid regatta is the second largest annual international regatta in the western hemisphere.
Based on his performance at the regatta, Wilbert Lam has been selected as a member of the US Junior World Championships team. He will race with the team at the International Canoe Federation Junior World Championships in Brandenburg, Germany July 29-31. Lam is the first member of the Cascade team to compete at the World Championship level.
