Coming off third at districts, Hazen revving up for state | Boys swim & dive

Hazen finished third at the West Central District 3A championships Feb 12.

“It was a nice surprise,” said Hazen coach Ken Alfonso. “I would’ve been happy with top five.”

Kennedy Catholic won the meet with 218 points. Wilson took second with 207.5 and Hazen third with 138. Fifteen teams competed.

Sophomore Chase Onstot won the 500 freestyle with a time of five minutes, 9.47 seconds. Onstot also took second in the 200 free.

“Having Chase do what he does helps,” Alfonso said.

Hazen’s team of Corbin Kozai, Chris Foth, Malcolm Mitchell and Alex Gayte took fourth in the 200-yard medley relay.

Mitchell, a freshman, finished sixth in the 200 free finals. Junior Brandon Alexander finished fourth in the one-meter dive competition.

Hazen (Kyle Nelson, P.J. Warmenhoven, Gayte and Onstot) finished fourth in the 200 free relay.

The Highlanders’ team of Nelson, Mitchell, Warmenhoven and Onstot took fifth in the 400 free relay.

Hazen is sending 15 swimmers and one diver to the 3A state meet starting Friday at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

“Chase is going to score some points,” Alfonso said. “If I can get one relay to swim in Saturday (in the finals) that would be a success. We’re just looking to get faster.”
