The Renton High volleyball team has a simple goal: collect more wins than losses.

Entering her seventh year as the head coach, Sally Eager has taken the program from the edge to make it stable with solid numbers each season. The next job is bringing in the wins.

“When I took over the program, there were 11,” Eager said. “By the end of that year, I had 26. Now we’re up at about 30.”

The team went 3-11 last season and tied for sixth place in the Seamount League. With some good players back, the Indians just need to finish matches strong in order to improve.

“Last year we got down to the wire, then we would lose it,” Eager said.

Renton welcomes back two club players this year in Alexis Lagonoy and Sarah Nelson. Lagonoy will play setter. Eager is looking forward to the growth between Lagonoy and Nelson now that they’ve played together for some time.

“The Sarah, Alexis connection is going to be solid,” Eager said.

Nelson will be at middle hitter. The junior made the all-Seamount second team last season. “She’s a great athlete. She’s going to be good,” Eager said.

Other important returners include Breann Benedictus, a utility player, and Boryana Atanasovsa, an outside hitter. Eager hasn’t decided where to play Benedictus yet, but her athleticism should lend her to any position.

Atanasova placed at the 3A track meet this spring in both the shot put and the discus. Eager said she has a “bullet serve.”

Lagonoy, Benedictus and Atanasova both made all-Seamount honorable mention last season.

One impact newcomer is senior Siosiana Lauaki. Eager isn’t sure where she’ll play yet, but said she has an “amazing pass.”

The Indians need to overcome both fielding a team with few returning club players and their short stature.

“We don’t have a lot of height,” Eager said. “I tell them they’re just vertically challenged.”

The team will get its first taste of action Saturday in a varsity jamboree at Kennedy. The first league match is Sept. 23 at Foster.
