Girls Soccer: Hazen draws with Highline; Lindbergh easily beats Foster

The path to a first state tournament appearance since 1993 may now be a little tougher for the Hazen soccer team after a 2-2 tie with Highline Oct. 8.

A win would have boosted the Highlanders (5-4-1 overall, 5-3-1 league) into fourth place in the league. That would assure the team a spot in the bi-district tournament.

If Hazen finishes in fifth in the Seamount, the team will play a loser-out game against an SPSL team for the right to go to bi-districts, then to state.

“We made getting to state harder,” said Hazen coach Ken Matthews. “I was hoping we’d get that fourth place yesterday (Oct. 9) and control our destiny for the rest of the season. There are a couple of scenarios that would get us to into one of those slots, but they all depend on help from other teams.”

The Highlanders went down against Highline early when Kaitlyn Mendoza scored off a long pass.

Hazen got back in the game when Kayla Hackman nailed a direct free kick from 19 yards out. Hackman leads the Seamount in scoring with 17 goals and five assists.

Mendoza scored again before the half when she ended up with a free ball and touched it in. That game the Pirates a 2-1 lead.

“I think we played at our highest level during the second half. When our defenders got their ability to score shut down, we were able to start playing Highlander Soccer. The field opened up and we did some nice passing and running. That leads to opponents scrambling and fouls happen,” said Matthews.

After a foul, Hazen got a free kick from 30 yards out. Sam Zyskowski dropped a chip that Taylor Hoover nodded into the goal with a header to tie the score at 2-2.

Hazen plays Foster tonight at 6 p.m.

Lindbergh 9, Foster 1

Lindbergh made quick work of Foster, winning 9-1 Oct. 9.

The Eagles (7-2-1, 7-2-1) got goals from Nicole Burnette (3), Lana Amandus, Jami Kouba, Kimi Girmus, Seann Padriga (2) and Whitney Hilde.

Lindbergh is in third place in the Seamount and looks to be in line to earn a trip to bi-districts.

Liberty 0, Mount Si 0

Liberty and Mount Si found plenty of defense on the way to a 0-0 draw Oct. 8.

The Patriots (1-6-4, 1-2-4) got a shutout from Macaire Ament.
