Girls soccer: Lindbergh moves on to state tournament after topping Olympic

The Lindbergh girls soccer team was outnumbered, but it didn’t matter. In Saturday’s district winner-to-state, loser-out game, Olympic’s bench certainly looked more impressive.

The team boasted 20 players, three assistants, a water boy and a trainer. Over on the Eagles’ side it was coach Kirk Tavener and his small team of 15 girls.

It was Lindbergh that came away with the 1-0 win a state berth.

“It’s a great testament to these girls that they keep coming and coming,” said Lindbergh coach Kirk Tavener. “We were outmanned and out-armed, but they kept in there and didn’t give up.”

The Eagles (12-4-2) are in state for the first time since 2006, meaning there is little state playoff experience to go around. That may explain what Tavener thinks the team didn’t play up to its ability Saturday.

“I don’t think we came close to even playing our best,” he said. “Our biggest challenge is to play our best game forward in the next game.”

The young team felt it didn’t play as well as it could have and Tavener said celebration after the Olympic win was at a minimum, despite clinching a state berth.

Nicole Brunette hit the game’s only goal on an assist by Jordyn McLuen in the 60th minute. Audrey Cunningham earned the shutout in goal. It was Brunette’s 20th goal, McLuen’s 13th assist and Cunningham’s ninth shutout of the season. All three totals lead the Eagles.

“They’re still a little cautious,” Tavener said. “They didn’t talk too much. It’s something different for them.”

Lindbergh will face Meadowdale Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at Edmonds Stadium in the first round of the 3A state tournament.
