It took two rounds of shootouts, but Hazen won its first playoff game since at least 1998 Wednesday.

The Highlanders (11-6-1) topped Sumner 2-1 in a Seamount/SPSL sub-district game at Renton Stadium.

The teams ended regulation locked at 1-1. Then after two five-minute overtimes, they headed to shootouts. The first round ended 2-2.

In the sudden death phase, Hazen’s Sarah Schoville placed a shot high right and out of the keeper’s reach. The ensuing Sumner shooter hit the post and Hazen won.

“I’m the new guy so I don’t know how the rates with the team, but I do know there were some pretty happy girls after this one,” said Hazen coach Ken Matthews. “They’ve set some pretty incredible goals and now they’ve put themselves into a position to attain them.”

Hazen will travel to Vancouver to play Union Saturday at 3 p.m. for a chance to advance to state for the first time since 1993. The loser of the game is out.

Kayla Hackman scored Hazen’s goal in regulation on an assist by Marina Vaughn in the 38th minute.

Taylor Hoover, Vaughn and Schoville all made shots in the shootout.

Keeper Priscilla Yu kept Hazen alive with a number of saves.

Enumclaw 2, Lindbergh 0

Lindbergh fell to Enumclaw 2-0 Wednesday in a Seamount/SPSL sub-district game.

The Eagles (11-4-2) play Olympia Saturday at 1 p.m. for a chance to advance to state.
