Hazen’s Lauren Kaufman will have to wait another year for a chance at her state title.
The sophomore finished third in the 50-yard freestyle at the 3A state swim meet as a freshman and hoped to improve on that finish this season and take the title. She missed out by less than a second and half, but still earned a third-place finish in the race.
The 3A state swim meet was Nov. 12-13 at King Country Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
Kaufman also finished fifth in the 100-yard freestyle, improving on her ninth-place finish last season.
Hazen placed 10th in the 200-yard medley relay (Kaela Nurmi, Kaysie Rozsonits, Kaitlin Nelson and Kaufman). Rozsonits placed 10th in the 50-yard free, Nurmi placed 19th in the same race. Hazen finished ninth in the 200-yard freestyle relay (Rozsonits, Nurmi, Nelson and Kaufman). Nurmi placed 21st in the 100-yard backstroke. Rozsonits placed ninth in the 100-yard breaststroke.
As a team, Hazen finished 11th at the meet. The Seamount was well represented. Kennedy won the 3A team title and Mount Rainier placed fifth, followed by Hazen’s strong finish.
