Five Hazen tennis players made it to the 3A state tennis tournament on May 23-24.
The boys singles and doubles tournaments were at Kamiakin High School. The girls singles and doubles tournaments were at Tri-Cities Court Club in Kennewick.
Hazen’s Ryan Nagamatsu fell in the first round 6-4, 6-2 to Nick Kamisar of Skyline in the boys singles tournament. Nagamatsu then lost to Everett’s Andy Monroe in the second round. Nagamatsu started well and won the first set 6-3. The second set went to a tiebreaker and Monroe came away with the set 7-6 (4). Monroe then won the final set 6-1, took the match, and eliminated Nagamatsu.
Hazen’s boys doubles team of Mark Ishimitsu and Trevor Takami lost 6-1, 6-1 in the first round to Matt Ellis and Max Franklin of Mercer Island. The Hazen team rebounded to win two straight matches. The first was 6-4, 6-4 over Nick McMurray and John Maccini of Mount Spokane. Ishimitsu and Takami then beat Elliot Appel and Tam Nguyen of North Thurston 6-4, 6-1. The tournament came to an end for the team in the final four of the consolation bracket against Anh-Vu Thai and Peter Brown of Kamiakin. The Kamiakin team won 6-1, 6-2 and ended up taking sixth place in the tournament.
Hazen’s girls doubles of Angie Wnek and Kelly Lank lost 6-2, 6-1 in the first round to Sara Portesan and Liane Fijalka of Meadowdale. Caroline Daly and Hannah Mangham of Lakeside then beat the Hazen team 6-0, 6-1 in the next round to oust Wnek and Lank from the tournament.
