Hazen falls to Glacier Peak in second round of state tourney | Boys basketball

The Hazen boys basketball team got off to a quick start against Glacier Peak, but still lost 50-49 in the second round of the 3A state tournament Saturday at Marysville-Pilchuck High School.

The Highlanders (21-7) led 14-2 after the first quarter. Glacier Peak bounced back somewhat and cut Hazen’s lead to 10 by the half. Hazen then still clung to a five-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Glacier Peak outscored Hazen 18-12 to pull out the close win.

Michael Dampier led Hazen with 13 points. R.J. Magar scored 10. De’Corrius Sampson and Dawit Kasa each added nine.

The Highlanders won the Seamount title this season and made state for the first time since 2002. Their first-round win against Mountlake Terrace was the program’s first state win since 1998.
