Hazen knocks off Renton | Soccer

The Hazen soccer team beat Renton 3-1 Tuesday.

The Highlanders (5-3-2 overall, 5-1-2 Seamount) took the lead early when Jonathan Bettencourt scored after a short pass from Conner Hall on a corner kick.

Hazen held a 1-0 lead until four minutes into the second half when Sam Bunnell scored on a penalty kick. The Highlanders struck again a minute later when Alan Montes scored on an assist by Jordan Lewison.

This was the second game since Ken Matthews took over as head coach. The team also tied league-leading Kennedy Catholic April 7.

“They’ve gotten a fire lit under them a little bit,” Matthews said. “It’s kind of like it was a business for them before and now it’s more an emotional type of thing.”

Matthews had his team try a new formation against Renton and, after just two practices, is still learning about the Highlanders.

“I learned they’re adaptable,” he said. “We tried some things they’d never done before.”

Renton’s Vladimir Hernandez tacked on a goal in the late minutes.
