Hazen, Lindbergh, Renton fall out in sub-districts | Girls basketball

The Hazen girls basketball team fell to Enumclaw 52-44 in the sub-district tournament Friday, ending the Highlanders’ season.

Hazen (11-9) led through much of the game, but struggled to limit Enumclaw’s chances because of the Hornets’ advantage rebounding the ball.

“Rebounding is want-to,” said Hazen coach Jeff Bernhardt. “It doesn’t matter how tall you are, if you want to get a ball you can go get a ball… That’s our Achilles heel and we didn’t overcome it this year.”

Hazen led 29-28 heading into the final quarter, but Enumclaw soon took over by feeding the ball to its post Katina Ferguson, who scored 18 points.

“We lost our defensive responsibilities,” Bernhardt said. “Credit them for punishing us for it.”
