After uncharacteristically dropping two games in a row, Hazen Soccer rebounded Saturday with a big win over Yakima’s Eisenhower Cadets.

Hazen took a step in the right direction with a win over a much improved Cadet team with a 6-0 win at home.

“We were moving and passing much better from the back to the front today.  The three defenders (seniors Gabby Brower and Courtney Kiteley and sophomore Nicole Anderson) worked well together on coverage and also started plays for us with great passing under pressure,” Coach Ken Matthews said.

The midfield and attackers took care of controlling the middle and scoring for the Highlanders who improved their record to 2-3-0.

Scoring for the Highlanders were senior Korbyn Walls with a hat trick, Senior Brianne Sherin who had a goal and three assists, sophomore Erin Zetterberg, and Senior Melissa Carney. Assists were provided by Brower, junior Brook Swensen, and senior Chelsea Delgado.

Sophomore keeper Brittany Dinkins got the shutout.

Matthews also cited senior Cindy Hanson and sophomore Taylor Lenton for outstanding play.

Of his team’s uncharacteristic back-to-back losses to non-league teams, Matthews said, “The losses were so strange for us. The Garfield game gave me confidence we were going to be okay in spite of the positional changes, players being out and injuries. Looking back maybe we just played a great game and hadn’t really adjusted yet.”

Hazen hosts the Highline Pirates at 7: 30 p.m. Tuesday at Renton Memorial Stadium.
