After three straight losses, the coach of the Hazen girls soccer team hopes that the team’s 2-1 win against Tahoma will get things moving in the right direction again for the Highlanders.

The win is also slight redemption for Hazen, who lost to the Bears 5-0 three weeks ago on the league opener for both teams.

Hazen came into Friday’s match in seventh place in an eight-team league and playoff hopes beginning to fade, but the Highlanders scored first to tale a 1-nil lead on a goal from Nia Johnson at 29 minutes into the first half. Madison Kem had the assist.

But Tahoma would not go quietly and toed the game with 12 minutes left in the half to send the teams to the break knotted at 1.

It stayed tight through the second until Amy Warmenhoven put the game-winning goal into the back of the net with about nine minutes left in the game. Kem had the assist, her second of the match.

Matthews said the game against Tahoma marked the beginning of the Highlanders’ second time through league play and said it was a “chance to hit ‘refresh.’”

“We knew the league would be tough but we’re better than that,“ Matthews said of the first half. “I told them we’re 1-0 this half of the season and no one can say anything different.”

Hazen plays Kent-Meridian Tuesday at French Field.
