Hazen’s Spring Break adventures ended last night with a tie against Kennedy 1-1.

The Highlanders took a lead in the first half when Senior Forward Isaiah Blount’s cross through the middle was put away by Sophomore Mid Reyes Garcia. Kennedy scored midway into the second half to get the draw.

Hazen has struggled with finding the net this season.

On Monday, they could only manage a 1-0 win against in town rival Lindbergh. Senior Captain and Mid Luis Puga scored from an assist by Junior Forward Ricky Aguirre and held on for the three points.

“Admittedly, Lindbergh is playing much better and along with Foster are the most improved teams in the league this season,” said Hazen coach Ken Matthews in a press release.

Foster beat Hazen 3-1 a week ago. In that game Hazen gave up two soft goals to go down early. Garcia’s goal off a Puga assist got Hazen back in the game with a goal to cut the deficit to 2-1 at the half, but Foster put it away with a goal in the second.

Last night, Hazen’s effort impressed Matthews. The Highlanders may struggle a little getting goals but their defense has been stellar. Kennedy came into last night’s game with a league best 5-0-0 having outscored their opponents 18 to 0.

“We’ve had some injuries in the back and needed to move another defender so Zach, Hector and Kyle have been carrying the load for us on that line,” said Matthews. “We also switched back to our traditional formation which makes their job a lot tougher.”

Matthews was referring to Sophomores Zach Quesnel and Hector Cervantes and Senior Captain Kyle Bunnell. Since the formation switch, the three have combined to limit the opponents to a 0.33 goals against average. Throw in the two keepers, Sophomore Erik Johannesson and Junior Jaime Martinez, and Matthews is cautiously optimistic about the rest of the season.

Last night’s Men of the Match were Quesnal and Sophomore mid Gorav Singh.

Hazen is off until Monday for an abbreviated and short spring break.
