The Hazen Highlander soccer team are the 2013 Seamount League Champions.
Coming off huge back-to-back wins against Lindbergh and Kennedy, Hazen beat an outmanned Tyee Totems squad tonight 8-0 to end their 2013 Seamount League with an undefeated record and a very nice piece of hardware for the trophy case.
Eight different players scored for the Highlanders. Brianne Sherin, Brook Swensen, Amy Warmenhoven, Korbyn Walls, Kristina Holm, Emma Lorrigan, Madeline Kaiser, and Madison Kaiser all had goals.
Warmenhoven and Gabby Brower had three assists each and Chelsea Delgado and Sherin also had assists.
At the conclusion of tonight’s game, senior captains Brower and Delgado accepted the league championship plaque for Hazen Soccer from Mr. Ed Crow, Hazen’s Assistant Principal and Athletic Director.
“We don’t really talk much about last year’s co-championship but this one is our real own championship. The first at Hazen girls’ soccer since 1992,” said Hazen Coach Ken Matthews in a press release.
Matthews said this title has been coming for Hazen Soccer since 2009.
In 2009 Hazen got their first playoff berth and winning record since the 1993 season. In 2010 another playoff ticket and winning record including a big draw against Kennedy.
Three seasons ago, Hazen went undefeated in league, drew Kennedy three times and beat the league champions. They got edged out on points on the championship but had a winning record and advanced to the playoffs.
Last year a winning record, a league co-championship and the playoffs.
Since 2009 Hazen Soccer is 57-25-11. In the previous five years they were 27-44-2.
“In 2009 when Bre (Hazen Assistant Coach Breann Vanden Bos) and I got here, everyone was kind of in a rut. That first year the girls got a little momentum going for us and it starting coming together. I’m sitting here with a league trophy on the bookshelf right next to me. I know it will sound like a cliché, but tonight wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for every girl who has worn a Hazen jersey these last five seasons,” Matthews ended.
The playoffs are next for Hazen. The Highlanders will face Auburn Mountainview at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Renton Stadium. Both teams will advance to the Bi-district tournament on Thursday and Saturday.
