The Hazen boys tennis team dropped their match on Friday against Tahoma 2-3, but rebounded to win five out of six events this past weekend to take first place at the Renton School District Invitational tournament at Hazen High and McKnight Middle schools.
On Friday, Tahoma proved too much for the Highlanders, topping them 3-2 in a back-and-forth match at Tahoma.
Hazen’s Sohil Shah, playing second singles, fell to 0-4 in his first set but cam all the way back to win the match 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 to pick up one of Hazen’s wins. The first doubles team of Nick Bennett and Nick Dazell also won thei match 6-0, 7-5.
On Saturday, the Highlander hosts won five out of six events in the tiered tournament for a convincing first place finish.
Hazen’s Dylan Kittay defeated Howard Ho of Renton in the first singles draw. In second singles, Hazen’s Shah defeated Renton’s David Huynh while Brandon Chea of Hazen defeated Highline’s James Akins in the third singles match.
In doubles Lindbergh’s Patrick Tiamzon and Donovan Dang took the first doubles championship match against Drew Sagmoen and Foss Fosberg from Highline. William Eng and Kenny Nguyen of Hazen defeated their Highlander teammates Ryan Ung and Tim Wong in second doubles and the Highlander team of Austin Demise and Alex Huynh defeated teammates Josh Kittay and Jeremiah Lee in the third doubles final.
Highline scored second overall followed by Lindbergh in third and Renton in fourth.
The Hazen boys are now 1-1 on the year and are scheduled to play Kennedy today, Monday, at Hazen. Also this afternoon, Lindbergh hosts White River and Renton hosts Highline. All matches are at 3:30 p.m.
