The Lindbergh girls tennis team gave Hazen a scare this past Friday, but in the end the Highlanders kept their undefeated season going with a 4-3 win.
According to coach Gail Ellis, the Eagles jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first round of play.
In first singles, Lindbergh’s Liezel Villanueva bested Hazen;s Misa Takami 6-2, 6-0 and the first doubles team of Mint Pearyoo and Jessica Tiamzon beat Hazen’s Kitty Ling and Kristy Huynh 6-4, 6-4. In second singles, Lindbergh picked up another victory as Sharleen Garcia and Colette Perry won a tight one 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.
But Hazen came roaring back. In third doubles, the team of Katherine Eng and Arden Phu topped Kate Hebbeler and Angie Thai 6-2, 7-5 while in secon singles, Elise Wong rallied from a first set blanking to defeat Myranda Dang 0-6, 6-2, 10-6. In fourth singles Catherine Lin beat Lindbergh’s Christina Chanthavong 6-2, 6-2 to tie the overall match at 3-3.
According to Ellis, it all came down tot he evening’s final match-up at third singles.
Hazen’s Ashley Hwang took the first set, but Lindbergh’s Bonnie Yip battled to a second set victory, setting up a third set tiebreak eventually won by Hwang for a 7-5, 4-6, 10-8 line.
Hazen moves to 4-0 overall and in league. Lindbergh drops to 3-2 overall and in league.
Lindbergh is scheduled to play at Renton today, Monday, while Hazen hosts Kennedy Catholic this afternoon.
