The Hazen girls soccer team left the field disappointed after allowing two late goals to tie Kennedy Catholic 2-2 Thursday night. That in itself says something about the direction of the Highlanders this year.
“We just kind of fell apart the last 10 minutes,” said Hazen coach Ken Matthews. “The girls were terribly disappointed.”
Since 1999, the Lancers have a 28-0-1 record against Hazen with a 143-18 scoring advantage, but it’s Hazen’s who’s looked like the better team much of 2011.
“Our history with these guys hasn’t been stellar, so we’re making the turn,” Matthews said. “You never turn down points against Kennedy.”
At 7-0-3 overall and 6-0-2 in Seamount play, the Highlanders sit in first place in the league, two points ahead of Lindbergh.
Hazen took the lead in the 22nd minute when Gabby Brower scored off of a Marina Vaughn assist. Sarah Schoville scored in the 48th minute off a Brower assist to push the lead to 2-0. Kennedy finished the comeback with a goal in the 78th minute to tie the game.
Hazen led Kennedy for most of the teams’ first meeting of the season before the Lancers scored late and the game ended in a 1-1 knot.
“We came so close two times,” Matthews said. “Now we have to go all the way to win it. We have to play 80 minutes to win it, as opposed to 70 minutes.”
The two play again Oct. 20 for the final time in the regular season.
Hazen takes on Newport (3-5-2) Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at home in a non-league game.
