The Hazen baseball team put up three runs in the first inning Wednesday against Highline and never looked back, beating the Pirates 6-1 at Highline.
Junior Ryan Gayte pitched a complete game, giving up only five hits and one run, which came in the final frame, to get the win.
The Highlanders got things started early. Senior Zack Hill walked to start the game followed by Gayte, who was hit by a pitch. Senior Isaiah Potter and senior J. Crosby hit back to back singles to bring in the first run. junior Nolan Hoover and sophomore Ben Hoeper then grounded out to second base back to back bringing in the second run and third runs of the inning.
In the sixth inning, sophomore Ben Hoeper led off the inning with a single. Junior Eli Azcueta follwed up with another single, advancing Hoeper to third base. The Highlanders then executed a double steal, as Azcueta stole second and Hoeper stole home on the throw down to second base. Next up, Junior DJ Anderson hit singled to center field scoring Azcueta.
Thursday’s game against Evergreen has been postponed. Hazen is scheduled t play Tacoma’s Stadium High School Friday at Cheney Stadium, home of the Tacoma Rainiers, on Friday.
