The Hazen baseball got league play started on the right note, beating Kennedy Catholic 12-2 in a six-inning game Thursday.
The Highlanders (1-1 overall, 1-0 Seamount) scored in every inning of the game before winning by the mercy rule. The game was a make-up for the scheduled March 16 contest that was rained out.
Junior Jimmy Schmidt led the way on the mound, pitching a complete game and earning the win. Schmidt allowed five hits, struck out four and walked none. He also went 2-3 for with a two-RBI single at the plate.
Alex Gayte went 2-2 with three RBI and a run scored. David Green went 2-3 with two doubles and an RBI. Jeff Beckman drew four walks, scored two runs and hit a double. Eric Jacobs drew three walks, hit a single and scored a run.
Cody Moorhead made the play of the game on defense when he made a running catch in the outfield then threw back to first to complete a double play that ended the game.
